Alexander The Great Pendant

This drachm of Alexander III of Macedon (the Great) was produced at the Amphipolis mint. There were 20 or so mints working to supply Alexander with silver and gold coinage so he could support his far-flung empire and the troops necessary to maintain it.
The obverse or front of the coin represents the young Heracles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion. Alexander claimed descent from Heracles through his mother, Olympias, and also appreciated the fact that Heracles was a demi-god. The reverse of the coin features an enthroned, partially-clothed Zeus holding an eagle in his right hand and a staff in his left.
