Euboia Coin Earrings
The coins in this pair of earrings are from the island of Euboia, off the eastern coast of Greece. The nymph Histaia is featured on both sides of the coin: on the obverse as a profile head and on the reverse riding on the prow of a galley. Histaia was a water nymph. The spring that the locals believed that she inhabited was so important to the community that they named the town after her. Since Euboia is an island—obviously shipping was extremely important also.
