Philip II Pendant

Price starts at: $5,200

Three very important events occurred in the life of Philip II of Macedon in the years 357-356 B.C. First, he conquered the Thracian city of Amphipolis—gateway to the spectacular ancient gold and silver deposits of Mount Pangaion, second, he was allowed, as the first non-Greek, to participate in the Olympics of that year. He entered a horse and jockey and he won. Thirdly and most importantly, his wife Olympias gave birth to his son Alexander III (the Great). Philip’s silver coinage after those years featured the king of the Gods, Zeus, on the obverse and on the reverse, a naked jockey on a lively prancing horse commemorating his Olympic win.

Macedon. 359-336 BC. Silver tetradrachm. Obverse: Laureate Head of Zeus; Reverse: Naked Rider with a Palm on a Prancing Horse. Hand textured 22kt gold mounting.
